Something has shifted. Those who have spent years developing the capacity to see early, to sense change before it surfaces in data, to feel the shape of what is coming before it has a name, are noticing something unsettling. The gap between what they see and what everyone else sees is closing.

The question is why. And the answer matters enormously, because it determines whether human perceptual intelligence still has a future as a strategic asset.

There are three possible explanations.

The first is flattering. Perhaps those who see early have simply raised the floor for everyone around them. Their decades of cross-disciplinary reading, their restless pattern recognition, their willingness to sit with uncomfortable signals. Perhaps this has spread. Perhaps the culture of curiosity has widened.

This explanation is probably partly true. And it changes nothing fundamental. If the early seer has simply elevated the conversation, the gap remains. Others are catching up to where the early seer was. The early seer has moved further on.

The second explanation is more troubling. Algorithms are getting stronger. They surface trends faster, reach more people, and create the sensation of insight without the work of developing it. A person who once felt original for noticing something now finds that something already circulating in their feed, pre-packaged, pre-interpreted, pre-consensus.

The algorithm does not see early. It sees what is already trending. But it delivers that information with such speed and confidence that it mimics early perception. It creates the feeling of being ahead while ensuring everyone arrives at the same place at the same time.

This is not the narrowing of a gap. It is the manufacturing of a false consensus. More people feeling informed. Fewer people actually thinking.

The third explanation is the one that demands the most serious attention.

AI is giving everyone the same answers.

If a significant part of the early seer's advantage came from synthesising disparate information faster than others, that advantage is now gone. A language model can synthesise at a speed and scale no human can match. Ask it the right question and it will produce an answer that took a skilled generalist three months of reading to arrive at. It will produce that answer in seconds. For anyone who asks.

This is the real narrowing. Not of perception. Of information processing. And it is permanent.

But here is what AI cannot do.

It cannot walk into a building and feel that something has changed before the announcement is made. It cannot sense the quality of silence in a room where a decision has already been taken but not yet spoken. It cannot notice the specific way a colleague avoids a subject and understand what that avoidance means.

It has no skin. No history of being wrong in ways that cost something. No memory of the feeling that preceded an inflection point by eighteen months, when there was no data to support it and no language to explain it.

The capacity that is actually narrowing is the one that was always the least interesting part of early perception. The information processing. The synthesis. The pattern matching across known data.

What is not narrowing, what is in fact becoming rarer and more valuable as everything else gets automated, is the capacity to perceive what is not yet in any dataset. To feel the signal before it becomes information. To know something in the way that only comes from years of embodied, cross-disciplinary, emotionally exposed attention to the world.

That capacity cannot be prompted. It cannot be fine-tuned. It cannot be democratised by an algorithm.

It can only be developed. Deliberately. By the right people. In the right conditions.

The gap is not closing. It is changing shape.

What was once an advantage of information is becoming an advantage of perception. The organisations and individuals who understand this distinction and act on it now, before it becomes consensus, will hold the only edge that cannot be automated away.
